Smile Raven Ribbons and ESS Heil Driver

I have two questions about ribbons drivers.

Can you run a Heil AMT driver without a crossover? Will it hurt the driver? It's an interesting idea to build a crossoverless two way with a Heil on top and a woofer that can do 800 hz to the bottom.

New ESS Heil Driver

I an interested in trying a ribbon as a super tweeter for a single driver system I am trying.

Audio Nirvana 15" Full Range Driver

I have heard that the Raven R1 is an ideal driver for this. But since I am interested in also in trying the above design, perhaps getting a Heil would kill two birds with one stone (cheaper too).

How would you compare a Heil AMT to a Raven for a supertweeter (with a 15Khz high pass filter)?

Why yes I am a bat. I can hear to 22 Khz. And that is a definition of a supertweeter: frequencies above 15k.

Ok I can understand that. I would however consider the musical content of frequencies that high and ask yourself if $700 in drivers is really an effective purchase. I also think you will have far more audible problems with overlapping two drivers than any sins a crossover will cause. Then again I'm not a fullrange fan. If you are deadset against not crossing where the ear is most sensitive I would still consider a 5khz or so crossover.

I'm intereted in the new ESS Heil driver, too. Any good? (looks good, though ) I remember the original one had higher sensitivity, no?

I guess dipole freaks might like it.

Hi, tuckers

If I were you -- ready to make the system a 'two-way', I'd like to lower the xover point to 1~1.5kHz with drivers like Heil on top.

I don't think you can run the ESS great heil unfiltered, or cut too low.
Also note that the AMT-1 have had the membrane material changed several times and that it MATTERS.
Recently I heard the ones with yellow membrane and did NOT like them.
The new ones are different, for worse or better i dont know.

I have no experience on Raven ribbons.

PS: I would probably use the smallest mundorf heils as supertweeters, cut with a simple cap. Also decently priced (should be 250€ each or less).

It would be a waste of the Ravens to cut them in that high.

Remember also, a highpass filter is not typically a steep slope, you'll have a lot of contribution from that driver down to 3k and below.

Also, no highpass filter on the AMT1 is suicide.

I agree 100% with your point about the musical content at that high a frequency.

In the course of learning proper mixing, i've picked up on the dirty little secret of audio, that there's not really anything up there to improve.

And in the case of the Heil driver, it can do so much for the music if it's crossed over at a more normal frequency.
