I long ago ripped all of my digital music to a Netgear NAS (initially a Stora then a ReadyNAS when Stora fell off support) using jRiver Media Center. Since my habit is listening to albums rather than playlists I have put no effort into tagging and curating and it works just fine for me. The player is a Logitech Squeezebox Touch which some time ago went out of production but is still supported and working fine. LPs are still dealt with the old fashioned way...hold by edges, place carefully, clean, clean stylus, align, uncue, listen 20 minutes, rinse, repeat. Don't really much bother with LPs any more.

Foobar2000 can play and convert high resolution music. SACD for example.
Look at the plugins.

I ripped all my CDs to FLAC files on computer and play them back via Marantz NA6005 media server.

Would not go back now.

I find tagging and organizing the biggest chore, as MAACO explains. I do Genre/Artist/Album except when there are multiple artists, then it gets confusing. Classical can be difficult. Sometimes you want to search composer, or conductor, orchestra, artist.
JRiver is my player for the past 10 years because of its robust library management.

It would be nice to see some good discussion of vinyl "ripping". If Bill finds that thread, maybe he can link to it.

Classical is a gigantic pain. I just use the MPD search function to find where I put things. But I think I now have a dozen copies of some symphonies.

EDIT: The vinyl ripping thread is here Digitizing vinyl if anything wasn't covered there then worth re-animating that to keep good info in once place?

I'm trying it. Looks nice, giving a try so now maybe it will be easy to use flac.

I've used foobar on PC for some years now. Does most of what I want. Android version isn't too bad either. But no use for playing stuff on main hifi unless I have missed something.

Hi.

I've written up my recent CD rip experiences and added a little HowTo over here.

Main focus is on Linux though.
The challenges are the same on all platforms.
You'll find quite some generic info and hints in that article which are not platform specific.

Good luck.
