My brother wants to use an iPad or MacBook as source in a kitchen system so he can move the hand-held controller around and have iTunes and Internet on it (YT etc). He already has excellent audiophile amp and small speakers but so far not a DAC, though an ES9023 asynchronous one would be easy to source, for example. What's needed is a streamer to connect via wifi to the iPad/Macbook and then into the DAC.

I've built a few and you won't be disappointed
BUT you will not get airplay 2 like this so you can only stream to one system from iOS devices
If you want airplay 2 for multi room audio then you will need to buy one of the offerings from apple airplay 2 partners like sonos or demon
There are rumours that it may be coming to apple airport express also so that could be another option
