You don't want a horizontal in-room response. You want a gently sloping one - 5-10db down at 20k, depending on taste. Where in the bass response you start that drop is also probably a matter of taste and what works in your room.

it depends on age. we start losing highs rapidly as we get older so i suggest you try both and see which you prefer.
it also depends on the volume you listen at. so an older person, who listens at lower volumes may even need something that slopes upward at the higher frequencies.
