24/7 operation does not have to be expensive. We have very good experience with entry-level HP Proliant servers (ML115, current model ML116) for a few hundred dollars, they have been running in our company non-airconditioned server corner, loaded pretty much to 100%, 4 HDDs constantly seeking, for over 5 years. I would not use regular workstation hardware for 24/7, the power supply being the first to leave for eternity...
 
Yep, proliants are decent boxes, as long as you have them somewhere away from the microphones (Fan noise at high load).

24/7 does however require redundancy, one machine will never suffice.

Commodity PC power supplies (and to a lesser exten the VRM output caps on commodity motherboards) are really not intended for 24/7 use, and will let the smoke out sooner or later.
