I did a little reading on it after my post. Not a whole lot; I'm still assuming the user has to input the amount of silence into the header (perhaps tediously), or software must be capable of determining the silence for auto-input (which I might not fully trust).
But I never had a requirement of "playback with the gaps the same as the originals." As I said before, there's situations where it is important, and situations where it isn't. The latter undoubtedly outnumber the former, at least for me.

Here's a good example to try at home:
From the Crosby, Stills, and Nash album CSN, take the tracks "See The Changes" and "Fair Game." Play them in that order, with a small gap between them. It should be about 1 second from the "farther away" of the first song to the guitar intro of the second (but it's really only a tiny bit more than 0.125 second between the actual audio. You can view it by zooming in with your editor).
More is too much, less isn't enough.

Rippers like EAC get the exact lenghts of the gaps into the ripped files while ripping the way the CD layout specifies itself. No need to violate the audio files with gaps you guess.

It's an art form It is and this is a topic near and dear to my heart. I have an audiographic memory of some albums and cd's. Mostly albums I heard before I was 35. The remastering engineer, producer, engineer, artist, would often put the music together with the gaps intentionally of a given length. Brian Eno's production of Talking Heads 'More Songs About Buildings and Food' is one that pops to mind. He mastered and spliced it together so that the tempos continued through the silence between songs Track 1 Endsown-up-Down silence silence Track 2 Begins: Up-down-up down Continuing the next song on the beat, and in time! This means that the songs need to be spaced precisely apart in ms to have the same effect, and mp3 rips destroy this continuity of albums. Those spaces were put there for a reason, in the length specified.

Thanks to all.

I probably worried too much about this. By ripping the tracks according to the blowfish guidelines, which are very similar to cogsncogs recipe, and playing with foobar or Windows Media Player or VLC media player, they all run on perfectly, maintaining my sense of "audiographic satisfaction" as the players work through the "folders". My Mitsubishi Pajero audio player puts in a gap of about two seconds while it "thinks" about what to do next, but the basics of the rip and storing the songs all works fine for my home system.

There are no gaps in live concerts - and no audio artefacts between tracks - and the gaps between tracks on my old Beatles CDs are the same length as they were on the LPs. (Although I hate the way on the new Beatles stereo version re-masters that they cut the final notes shorter than the original - e.g. on Hard Days Night - so that the modern listener is not offended by tape hiss. Young people today ...)

Clearly the .cue sheet is much more important for burning CDs rather than listening to the files from your HD or USB stick.
