Ipad as Music Server
Will this work?
Ipad2 ----> Camera Kit USB adapter -----> USB cable with separate data and power lines (connected to battery source) -----> M2tech Hiface I USB-SPDIF converter ----> DAC
The reason I need to use the M2tech Hiface USB-SPDIF converter is due to my esternal DAC which only has a SDIF coaxial input connector. So since the Ipad2 cannot supply power to the Hiface, then a cable with separate data and power lines will be separately run thru a y-cable configuration and a battery pack will supply the needed 5 volts for the Hiface.
The Hiface II is class compliant. The Hiface I is not - that one won't work.
The iPad should work with all class compliant (generic driver compliant)
USB DACs via CCK as long as the DAC complies to the iPad power limitations.
Certain DACs - even if selfpowered - need a selfpowered USB hub in between.
The reason for this is that these DACs report (firmware config) high power consumption to the iPad even though they are locally powered.
A hub would then report the iPad compatible powerconsumption of its own ports.
A powerlinecut and feeding 5V externally to a Hiface II wouldn't help, if it reports a too high powerconsumption via firmware.
I brought this topic up in the Wave-IO thread. The Wave-IO IF wouldn't work if directly connected to and powered by the iPad.
It draws too much power. But. If you use an external PS AND a custom firmware (which should be available) that'll report low power consumption,
it'll work on the iPad.
Anyhow. You run HF I and NOT HF II. Bad luck from your perspective.
You can buy iPad docking stations now with digital out (Toslink and coax). Why don't you go that route and buy yourself a good external DAC.
I have BTW switched to JRiver Media Center - this also allows you to remote control a PC based music server and send music either way - from server to audio system or server to iPad. Very slick UI also.
+1 for J. River Media Center software, I've been using this on several incarnations of Win PC based media server for about six years now.
