Safe Mode and disable onboard for sound card?

Yes, you should disable your on-board audio device in the BIOS. As for the Safe Mode, that will prevent windows from loading all drivers but will not remove any of them from your setup. I suggest you start Windows as usual, in the Device Manager right-click on the sound device and select Uninstall. That will remove the driver from your setup. Shut down the machine, install the audio card and start the machine again. Enter the BIOS setup, disable the on-board sound device and exit it, saving the settings. When Windows starts it will probably recognize the new hardware. From that point, proceed as described in the audio adapter’s Installation Guide.
