noise from laptop charger
I get kind of a white noise that "rolls and bumps" from my stereo when the laptop is connected and the charger is connected to it.
Is it commonly necessary to build a better charger for the laptop to eliminate this.
Is this what I should do?

Most reasonable sound cards will filter this noise out.

Try a good USB Sound card first as it's not realy practical to eliminate all the noise from a poor Lappie.

disconnect the safety earth pin/use an un-earthed extension cord, you're experiencing typical ground loop issues.

Thats a bit dodgy.
It sounds like an EMC problem, what frequency is the noise approx.

well, it's an easy test. just use an un-earthed extension cord or adapter and you'll know without making any modifications..

It could be the charging circuits in the laptop generating noise, in which case nothing you can do to the external power supply will help. The external supply is nearly always just a plain power source. There's internal chips which monitor the battery voltage and temperature and limit the charging current and voltage so the battery doesn't go boom.

Use a USB or PC Card sound device. Or a USB headset; Microsoft's "Lifechat LX-3000" sounds extremely good for the price (often under $20 if you catch the right sale). I bought them a few years back, and they were comfortable (in spite of my large head) and sound good. Going by recent Amazon reviews, it is possible that Microsoft has let the quality slip. You could always wire up to an inline jack and plug in a different headset or headphones if the original headset breaks.
