Default Plextor Premium and Windows 7

I have a Plextor Premium USB from 2003. It was designed to work with XP. When I connect it to a 7 machine, the driver fails to load and the device shows up as a USB mass storage device. I am running Home Premium 64. I know that I can use the Pro editions to emulate XP. Would this help my problem? I really do not know what is going on here as I assumed that 7 would be backwards compatible with USB devices. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried updating drivers and computer says best driver already installed.
