JRiver Jukebox 14 is excellent...not even mentioned in this article.

An odd oversight.
Though if like me and the author you like to see the lyrics, to my knowledge JRiver (or its MC 15) does not provide for this

The guy who assessed the players is as clueless as anyone could be relying on third and fourth hand reports about a player that is basically a diy project. No, it is not as plug and play as any of those other ones mentioned, it has however possibilities that none of the others have.
To label foobar a "basic" player shows the guys incompetence when it comes to foobar. It has several DSP capabilities, options are not only available through menu, but also through the tabs on top and the "run" option opening by clicking on a panel (among other options that open then). The tabs are expandable by clicking shift and then selecting the tabs. Foobar in default user interface can be configured any which way you want to lay it out, it has a biography plugin, a lyrics panel plug in, has a converter that can be added, the library can be configured through a command line in the menu (just add your own organizing commands), server capabilities.....it took me some time - I would say about two weeks at least - to really check out what this program is capable of, and I haven't checked even half of what one can set it up to do. Relying on somebody likely having been spoiled by the easy plug and play simple layout and functionality of other programs is no help to those wanting use something they can really diy to their needs. |

I honestly kind of like iTunes. Shoot me now.
But it's just pretty simple. I've tried others like Foobar, and I think there's too much going on for my taste. iTunes is pretty straight forward. Here's your music. You don't have 17 sidebars going on and nothing too flashy. Unfortuneatly you have to being using an Apple device if you need to use it with an mp3 player, so in that case, I think Rhythmbox is pretty nice. |

Guitarists effects, crossovers and EQ: most likely more than the rest put together.
though the lengthy quotes suggest a need for programming type ability and learning: is that correct?

No, nothing to do with programming. You just download it, unzip the files into the foobar component folder and then select through the preference menu, which can be quite extensive depending on what you have installed.
Even the commands that you can use are fairly simple http type commands and there is in foobar some syntax help if you want to get into - but you don't need to. Foobar can be very simple when you just download it and get the default layout to very complex when you customize it, but it is a matter of installing components, trying out where they fit in, layout your own panels etc. Google is your friend here. |
