I'm not the bright bulb on the xmas tree, so please be patient with me...
So i got a Mac mini. Using itunes. Music is apple lossless format. Send the music via wifi to a new apple tv. DAC is attach via optical to apple tv. mini -> wifi -> new Apple TV -> toslink cable -> DAC -> stereo Can I do 24-96? I'm assuming 24-192 is a no-go since 192 toslink jacks are not very common. |

In theory yes... in reality we'll need to wait till someone tests one for that

thanks for the quick reply!
Am I right then to assume the following: * wifi wouldn't be a limiting factor (as I understand USB can be). * most likely the limiting component will be the apple tv |

yes, any limitations will be the optical S/PDIF output. Specifically the chip they choose to drive the output. I don't know much about S/PDIF hardware but i'd be surprised if anyone is making something that doesn't pass 24/96

I think it varies quite a bit. At work we have equipment that can only do 2ch @48k, some that does 2ch @96k, and some that can do 8ch @48k but only 2ch @96k. The specs might mention it somewhere for the apple tv.

Actual specs are light on the ground:
