networked i2s module (for networked DAC)?

Hello


Does anybody know if there is such a thing as a board/module/adapter that will;

1 - plug into my network
2 - talk to Windows & Foobar (UPnP?)
3 - put out an i2s signal
4 - handle 24bit 192kHz

I guess I am really looking for something like like a slimmed-down Squeezebox receiver with higher res.

A router with a usb port running OpenWRT would be capable of that... if you can cope with using a usb dac.

With openwrt on a supported router you can run MPD to play audio files from any networked pc (windows or linux), mpd can be controlled via any networked device.

So to answer your bullet points:

1. Yes, can even connect via wireless.
2. Doesnt need to talk to media player/foobar, can play files off any device once shares are setup.
3. Cant put out i2s (as far as I know) but can use any usb audio device
4. If your usb device supports it then yes.

Thanks Theo404. I just had a look at the openWRT website. They seem to have music streaming to USB DACs pretty well covered, although only for devices running on the standard (Linux) USB audio device drivers. Unfortunately this precludes 24/192 USB devices which, as far as I can see, all rely on proprietary software/drivers to make them work.

Despite that, openWRT looks pretty impressive and I'm tempted to have a play anyway, so thanks for the lead!

I'm 99.9% certain you are incorrect. The standard linux usb audio drivers are capable of what ever sample/bit rate you throw at them... device support however, is limited....

The new SB Touch falls a little short of one of your requirements, but it does do 24/96

What I am really after is a simple module board that I can build into my DAC case. I wouldn't really want the screen as I would plan to control it from a PC/PDA on the network and also, screens bring noise into the audio.

If there is no such thing as an network to i2s board, I will look deeper into openWRT solution - if it will work with my Hiface it would be closest in concept to my goal (and cheaper!).
