You can make hundreds of permutations of single-stage
amplifier toplogies. I figure there are about a hundred
which are non-trivial.

Default Mr N. Pass

Everything being equal, eg, similar power ratings, using same type of resitors and capacitors(power and bypass), and other active and passive components, and similar harmonic distortion.

You have designed many single ended mosfet amplifiers based on different topologies, my question to you is

1. Do they sound very different or similar in character?

Do you care to elaborate if possible? I am trying not to take up too much of your time.

Thanks...

Yes, they do sound different. It depends on the topology,
the devices, distortion, damping factor, amount of feedback,
and bandwidth. You can make all factors but one constant, but
you still usually get a different signature.

For me, the whole Zen and FW efforts have revolved around
very simple circuits, and I believe that they are excellent testing
grounds to isolate the influences of various parameters on the
subjective perception - they allow more apples-to-apples types
of comparison than more complex circuits, and the differences
are thrown into sharper relief.

At this point, a couple things are quite clear:

Low distortion is important. Even single-ended Class A circuits
with pure 2nd harmonic will sound audibly problematic at 1% thd.

Contrary to popular belief, 3rd harmonic is often subjectively
more pleasing to people than 2nd harmonic.

Anyways, listening to a variety of these designs is like drinking
wines. There is no ultimate, and much of the pleasure comes
from the contrasts.

/pass/: Last year drinking 2003 Mantra (the black label, not
the silver). This year 2003 Solaris.
