I use a pair of UK produced IMPULSE H2 (late type) horn speakers. The bass is a rear loaded horn, whilst the midrange is front loaded...the tweeter is an earlier focal unit and not loaded. These speakers though now vintage are very uncoloured, musical and very very fast. They also image well.
I wish to build a Pass amp and preamp to drive these - the nominal load is 8 ohms and the sensitivity is good at around 94-6 Db. My primary source is a turntable using a very low output original Kondo Audionote MC cartridge. I think that an amp in the 20 to 30 watt per channel range will give all I need by way of power. I would like a project which is not too testing to build and for which test facilities greater than a good Fluke 85 multimeter are not needed. I have trolled through many SS threads and seem to have many choices...As it is probable that anyone who reads this will have far more exposure to Mr. Pass's designs I will be grateful to have their views. Many thanks, Brianco. |

Sounds like a job for the Aleph 3. A later iteration was known as the A30. Either one gives 30W of class A, and does not require a lot of fancy setup stuff to get working. A little matching of devices is required, but that can be done with a meter. The bias is set by component choice, not by diddling a pot, so the bias is preset.

It was kind of you to reply. I will go with this as it seems simple enough for my purpose and lack of skills! Is anyone still selling boards for the A30? I am at present building a mc pre and line amp which uses a pair of J147 at the front and a sk214 at the linestage. It is completed with a transformer output. The design was given to me some years ago by Be Yamamura, along with Tamura transformers and beautiful 600ohm h pattern pots. So provided my input is not at fault it should sound good!. Thanks again, Brian |

Boards are probably available somewhere, but I don't know the details. I'm afraid I don't keep up with such things. Perhaps someone will post along those lines.
