Choky,

You did not say where you obtained the transistor, so I am not sure if this will be relevant. In the late 70s and early 80s I used to repair audio equipment and it was very common, especially in Marantz integrated amplifiers and receivers, to find Motorola parts with markings that did not match their standard packaging description. I found out that those were produced especially for some manufacturers, which meant you either had to buy the original replacement part from them or you had to find a suitable replacement using the schematics, data sheets and some math.
Where does this transistor come from?

two identical 10x20cm pcbs , each have 8 mentioned Motorolas mounted on small heatsinks.....origin unknown-collected for beans on flea market

between them are several ULN1101A,in fact 8 pieces also....

edit:
haha, just looking at one pcb,I found on one edge this scribbles :

76 9 50 47222855-001 1B AMPLI DE FRAPPE

reminds me on hitchhikers diary......;)
