maybe the best thing you could do is wait, Nelson promised there will be a Zen - suitable speaker project on www.passdiy.com soon.

I coud´nt wait. I had a lot of diskussion via email with passdiy (thanks) and i work on this:

I think any information out there which project will published at what time is in the DIY progress report thread.

for advantage of horns: to much information to post easily here.

please put in a search engine "why horns" or so, look for chicago horn speaker club - site, look for audioasylum - high efficiency forum - etc.

most important i think is high efficiency. Out of this come some advantages like dynamic range, linear because small movement of driver membrane, low need of power from the amp -> very linear and low distorsion when using class A amps like Zen ... but im not the right one to answer the question. there are better skilled people out there.

belive me, my knowledge was zero some month ago. All i knew was you use them on ships for signals and so.

main disadvantage: size.

horns are big, big speakers don´t sell good.

another point: if the advantage is you need only a few watts, it doesn´t fit in a market that sells stuff by arguments like "this amp has 1000Watts"

Or this way: there are a lot of ways to build good speakers for aleph2 or bigger amps. If you want good dynamics and you use a ZEN, you have maximum about 25Watt. Maybe only 5 - 10. So you need very high dB/W and this leeds to horns.

I can´t say the way i go is right, because i have no comparison. Also i don´t want to make a religion out of this. And my speakers are far away from beeing finished as you know. It´s an experiment and DIY will ever be experimental - this is why its interesting. And you learn a lot on this way.

If you want more information you could mail me and i send you what i have.

PS: for horns have a look on the hompage of carpenter, who posts a lot in all the alephx / and PCB related threads .

why not copy & paste it here, instead of mailing me?
I'm sure I'm not the only one here who whants to know :)

What do you call "Big"
From the pictures I've seen, a horn takes less volume than a classical speaker (but less practical volume, sure)

are horns good for "low" volumes? (This question might sound stupid, but for me, a horn is the big thing used like you said, on boats, with high volume)

ha - if you are really interested its too much to cut ´n paste!

look this:
http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.pl?forum=hug&n=37437&highlight=low+volume&r=&session=

and : the lower the frequency - the bigger the horn.

My A7 is about 1060*760*610mm or so- without the circulars. Its only for about 150Hz upwards a horn - lower its a bassreflex.

If you want to know something about a truely bass horn you will want to search here for "the claw"
