Default Aleph-X AC Gain

A stupid question!
I don't have a signal generator, unable input a 60Hz or 1KHz signal for AC gain adjustment. Hong Kong power line is 50Hz can I use a 50 Hz signal ? Please explain why use 60Hz or 1KHz.

Hi dzkh63,

It is not a stupid question. I use a test CD played through an ordinary CD player. It has pre-recorded sine and square waves at various frequencies and produces them with lower distortion than many quality signal generators would.

You use low frequency signals like 100Hz because the AC measuring tool used by most amateurs here (like me) is usually a VOM that doesn't have a wide bandwidth.

I do somewhat different approach.

I use 88-97dB speakers to adjust the ac current gain.
When the ac gain is going higher, my ear at about 200mm away
from the speakers detects somewhat noise on idling condition.

I stop the ac gain adjustment when I arrive at the point of a
reasonable level of noise (actually very weak) from the speakers.
At this point, I get about 30% of ac gain, and also very good
sonic quality.
