For a given form factor and type, are there high quality/performqnce and low quality/perfermance brands in the MOSFET world?
Nelson Pass commented in one of his Zen articles that people send him super-duper caps, wire, resistors, etc., but what he really would prefer (and never receives) is a better MOSFET. Was this a rhetorical statement by Mr. Pass? Are there no "Ferrari" MOSFETs on the market? He speaks about non-linear input capacitance being the source of distortion. Do all MOSFETs suffer from this characteristic, even the "Ferraris", if they exist?

It depends on the part. Charles Hansen would steer you
away from IR brand P channel parts, and for Common Source applications, so would I, recommending Harris or Fairchild. On the N channel parts, there is no standout in the IR types - IR seems to have a little more part-to-part consistency in my experience, but not enough to drive the choice if you're already testing them. Of course we're only talking about vertical Mosfets when we talk about IR, and lateral Mosfets are a different breed. Some prefer them as they seem to have more linear capacitance, but often this is more than offset by the very much lower transconductance. All you can do is try this stuff out and see how well it works in a particular application.
