Default New Energy Converter ...

Hi!
I would like to present you my new Energy Converter For Photonic Emission Bias Bulbs: the Zen Lite amp.

I atteched some pictures of the completed amp. (Sorry for the bad quality, I have only a very simple digi cam .)

The base is made out of 5mm aluminium sheet and 2 pieces wood on the sides. The amp is operating faultles since the first turn on. Each channel has its own power supply with more than 120.000 uF and 4mH pi filter. No turn on "thump" or any other kind of noise, the amp is deadly quiet on idle. Aftter 1 hour operating, the amp's temperature is only around 45 C.

The sound of this amp is really superb! Very musical, clear and dynamic and ubelivable detailed! May be my Aleph5 has a bit more dynamic and/or my JLH1969 has a bit more "air/space" between the music notes, but in fact, it is one of the best amp I have ever heard! Probably the best.... !?! I use now the Zen Lite with the BOZ, what is also a very pretty sounding preamp. Later I would like to try direct from CD player or from a tube preamp/buffer.

And here is the part list:
- 19" case
- two 36V 200VA transformer
- capacitors are 2x 60.000 µF 75V Philips and 1x 10.000 µF Jamicon and 3.3uF nonpolar-film types Remix coupling capacitor per channel
-2x 4 mH inductor
- 1x irfp240 Mosfet per channel
- 2x 110V 150W bulbs per channel
-10R/6W thermistor
-normal metalfilm 1% 0.5W resistors.

I would like to thanks to Mr. Pass and the Pass Labs crew for sharing their knowledge and everyone on DIYaudio forum for help to build this wonderfull-magic amp!

P.S.:

I have 3 questions:

-How can I calculate the output power 8music power) of the amp?

-Is it possible to build or modify it to Zero Negative Feadback amp?

-Is it possible to operate it with 24V (may be with battery)? I have 100W/42V bulbs, what draw 1.8 A on 24V....!!!

Thanks!

Tyimo

It would be good to put some sort of heat shield between the light globes and the big capacitors to stop them getting hot and having a short life. A mirror would probably be the perfect thing, actually.

Concur with Circlotron re: shielding the caps from the heat of the bulbs.

Nicely done with the layout... very pleasing to the eye.

Hi!
Thanks!
I will measure the temperature around the bulbs, but I think it is not too warm.
Could you answer to my previous questions?

Nice job. To answer questions:

1) Most of the time, you can take the Drain voltage, subtract 2
volts, square it and divide by 8. This is probably your peak
wattage, and the continuous wattage is usually 1/2 that.

2) Yes, and a project will come up soon.

3) Yes, but the power will be low - there's a lot of loss using
a resistor (light bultb) as the current source.

Also, with regard to the capacitor temperature question, the
answer is generally the same as for heat sinks. If you can put
your hand on it, it's OK. Most caps are rated at 85 deg C, and
in my amps they usually are in an environment just above the
temperature of the sinks. Somehow they still manage to last
about 20 years or so.

Hi!
Thanks Mr. Pass!

I measured the temperature of the Caps and it is only 28 C, and even the bulbs self temperature is around 60 C!

Another question:

"...A single common-source gain device will invert the phase of the signal it amplifies, and this must be taken into account when using the circuit in an audio system. The Zen amplifier also does this, but we reversed the phase on its output terminals to compensate, which is not possible here. Using the Zen preamp usually requires that we adjust the phase of connection between amplifier and loudspeaker for phase integrity...."

-if I use the BOZ connected to the ZenLite amp (both are a polarity inverting circuit and by ZenLite the speaker + terminal goes to ground to compensate this effect) how I have to connect my speakers? The speakers pozitive goes to the ZenLite's output capacitor and the negative to the Zen's ground?

Default inductor versions

Hi!

Answering to my previous phase qustion: I made some tests and measure and when I use the BOZ with the ZenLite the phase is correct when the connection is: speaker's positive to the out cap and negative to the amp's ground! :-))

But now another question!!!

I would like to try the "legendary" inductor loading on the Zen.
Should I use a 100mH 0.5R inductor instead of the bulbs and the amp stay as it is or need I make some modifications in the circuit?
