Default AlephX/XA & current hungry loudspeakers

Hi,
how do these amps behave when conected to some low sensitivity and current hungry speakers? They are limited in power (not a problem), but they are limited in output current. How about short current peaks needed to drive difficult loads. I think they might run out of their limits (with current)

Some experiences?

Hi,

there´s no headroom or some kind of short time extra current available. You have to set the bias current as high as you need it.
How current hungry are the speakers you speak of? What sort of impedance and what sensivity?

William

Speakers are Dynaudio Audience 52, rated 150W, 4Ohm
A man, who reviewed them for our local hifi magazine (WATT) told me that they need a lot of current from very stable amplifier.

I have good front end of amp, and I need to decide what kind of output stage to use. I have 2 versions - output with active current source (NP patent #idontknow, like AlephX and XA series) or highly biased class AB output stage which can deliver current peaks without problem.

Hi,

Audience 52 should be no problem since they have (for a dynaudio at least) a reasonable efficieny. I once had a "Special One " with the unbelievable efficieny of 79dB

See to it that you have around 50-100 watts@4 ohms (means bias of around 6A). Or you could up the ac-current gain a bit for more power.

Thanx William.

In my first thoughts I've chosen bias to 5A and ac gain to 1.2x.
BTW I have som plans with variable bias, so I can switch to 1A when listening late night, or 2.5A when listening at normal levels and finally full bias at 5A. All switching is via optocouplers. So I hope that current will be enough.
