I couldn't imagine a simpler buffer. I guess that it requires a rather quiet power supply. It seems that two 9v batteries would work, while 7815 and 7915 Ic regulators may be noisy for the application?

Papa - do you mind writing few sentences - about compromises STILL present in PL products ?

it's not necessary to mention all exact ones, I'm just interested in your overall approach to them ;
