Default XBoSoZ + PGA2310 volume control

What will be the best way to implement a volume control for the XBoSoZ , using the PGA2310 (controled by a PIC)? For the XBoSoZ you need 4 pots in total - with 10k values.
Any suggestions welcome, keeping in mind that I just discovered PIC's and starting to learn them

97 views and nobody can give me the slightest clue
Will it work if I for example set the pots at 80% and then control the line-in with the PGA, then I only need to control 2 levels ?

Hi Jdev,

Be patient not a lot of folks have experience with this type of attuenator. I too have an interest in checking them out, and planned to experiment with a pair of these devices in the near future. There is probably a good reason why the highend audio vendors have not used these one chip attuenators. Placing op amps in the signal path of a circuit that strived for minimal devices in the signal path is contrary to the design intent.

Most folks have a high quality pot or a high quality resister network selected by relays or a rotary switch.

There is probably not a lot of folks in the forum who have taken this approach. However I'm sure someone has and they will probably answer if they see the post.

Good luck,

-David

ok,

i have some experience with those chip attenuators: http://home.tu-clausthal.de/~tpa/PGA/index.html

as well as with BZLS http://home.tu-clausthal.de/~tpa/relais/index.html for which i use a relay attenuator. Guess why.

IMHO if you want to build a volume control for a chipamp or a AD797 or OPA627 preamp, the PGA2310 / 2311 are fine. The minimalists circuit of BZLS calls for good quality potentiometers, switched attenuator, or relay volume control.

Words of wisdom indeed. If you want cheap opamp sound the 2310 is just fine.

Will the PGA sound worse then cheap pot's? My XBoSoZ was constructed with all general purpose components, nothing special. I also want to do the PGA thing to learn more about PIC programming, just want to be sure IF I connect it to line-amp, that I don't cause problems.

i will not claim any of both sound worse or better. Thats personal taste, i´m not the one to judge for you. There is nothing wrong in using the PGA or do any experiment else. But the attempt to convince everybody on this board >>>my<<< solution would be the best, would be wrong.

I would use the PGA instead of the BZLS, or in front of it in case you must. Better instead, you need no additional gainstage if using PGA.
