Hello, I just want to talk about something in my Bride of Zen amplifier power supply.
At the output of my 30-30v transformer, I have 95Vdc, so, at the output of the regulator, I have 60v. My TIP29 have to burn 35V! After a couple of minutes, My TIP29 is very very hot, It is imposible to touch it, it is to hot. I have a little heat sink on it, like the one on my mosfet.... I see two solution: 1- Use a bigger heat sink. I don't want to do that because it will be physically difficult 2-Put a power resistor between the 95v and the Collector of the transistor. To that, I need to have the current draw of the preamp, I'm not sure about this, maybe 100mA ? If that, the resistor will be 35/0.1=350 ohm ??? Thank you ! |

Another solution could be reducing the bias from about 40mA to about 30mA, by adjusting R108—i.e. V across R108/R108 = 30mA. I have tried with 30mA with a still good sound.

Further to post#2...
The reduction of the bias could be possible simply by adjusting P102 till the voltage across R108 reaches about 3V. If so, this method does not require any addition, deletion or change of component. Good luck. |

If you have 95VDC from your 30-30V transformer, I suggest that is the real problem. (I assume you rectify the two 30V secs in series with a bridge). Maybe you should get another transformer, for the pre-amp this would not be too expensive? Jan Didden

This are my heatsinks. Tip doesn't get hot - it's warm. That 5W resistor gets hot
So see for yourself if you have a smaller heatsink or something is wrong with yours (i remember you had some trouble with it). |

Here the picture of my preamp. He can see the little heat sink on my tip29 in the bottom at the right of the pic...
