BOZ upgrade: wich transformer ?

Dear Fathers of Bride Of Zen,

I plan to upgrade the power unit of my Bride Of Zen preamp.
I want to upgrade my current transformer (toroidal, 60 VA, 2x30V).
Do you think that 160 VA will be a significant change ?
What about the 1000 uF caps (C1,C3,C4,C101) ? --> 4 x 4700 uF ?
And the diodes (now 1N4004) ?

Hi Gubby

1 - I´m using Avel 160 VA , 2x30 in my BOZ, no problem.

2 - 2200uf for PS is a good option. Larger caps are not necessary for a preamp, IMHO. Yet you may need to increase mains fuse capacity due to higher starting current.

3 - 1A fast-soft recovery diodes are far enough too.

The best upgrade for the money are the 1,0 and 10,0 input caps.
A lot of BOZ ownners put 0,01 mf high quality film and foil bypass caps on them.

If you are adventurous, try an extra large tranny. When I first built my BOZ, I only had a 30+30 @ 5amp tran. The sound had great transient response and bass. I later used a 1 amp trans and it didn't have the punch the 5A did.

I read about this in Stereophile some years ago where John Curl used consecutively larger transformers in a preamp design and with every increase in size, the sound became more detailed.
