So as the Semisouth devices have become sadly unobtanium, any thoughts\experience on the SIC devices from CREE ?
Newark has them at least

I have considered, but find myself unsure if whether or not this can be run as balanced, tying another duplicate side together with this one, connecting the grounded end of r2 to the opposing transformers.

yes , you can - opposite output will act as virtual (better put - more than good enough) ground

for a moment I was puzzled about currents involved (through 100+18 ohms) , but then it clicked
