The one and only

I once had the privilege (thanks to Peter Perkins), of a tour
under Oroville Dam. A line-up of 100 megawatt generators in a cave as deep as Norad that could get close to a gigawatt (as I recall). Part of the tour was to be able to look at the shaft that drove one of these, rotating at about 6 rpm, and realize the force involved. There was nothing to keep you from reaching out and touching it. Nobody did. |
