I just read "The Legend of EL PIPE-O " and had a thought about a sub.
In the end you had the pipe at the end of the woofer. If this was done with a 8" sub, and reversed so that the end of the tube was pointed at the ground, would you have the same results? I was thinking about merging a "tube trap" and a sub into one unit. Putting a pair of them in the corners with the outside of the tube covered with an insulation material and fabric so that it would dampen ambiant noise produced by the other "room speakers" while offering up bass through the bottom of the tube. Make a backless enclosure for the sub so it had the appearence of a pillar. Mount it to the wall through a series of bolts. Kind of like a tube, inside of a half tube that was covered? See attached...Am I crazy here, or crazy like a fox? =) |

Look at the patent # 4,899,387 (the abstract first page is posted
at www.passlabs.com) and you will see that if you apply feedback to such a system with a microphone, you do get a nice bass absorbing/diffusing effect. The Shadow products looked like smaller versions of El Pipe-O with woofers at both ends and covered with the sort of absorbing material you describe. They are not, however, Tube Traps, which are a different animal. I suggest you pick up information about them from ASC's web site. |
