Couldn't be further from reality. You probably won't get an intelligent response with this mindset. Many different amplifiers, many different design philosophies. If Nelson made this design dual-mono, you'd be hard pressed to measure a difference with any significance let alone hear one. The fact that an amplifier is/isn't dual mono means relatively little to the final result...(fact). The PS on this amplifier is capable of 20 Amps. If you want to look at it another way, there is actually more power supply capability than is necessary.

Hello Mr. Nelson,
I'm not sure if I want one built for me. I never heard a Pass amplifier but I read great things about them. I had a ML 23.5 which I really loved but it got damaged during shipment, power light indicator does not work and one side runs much colder than the other. I called ML and found out they do not repair these and that the cost of repair would most likely be over $2000. After that experience I have decided to look elsewhere for a Class A amplifier, I don't have the cash to be dealing with these ridiculous repairs. I noticed a few X-250.5 listed on eBay and audiogon, I thought maybe I should try one out and see how they compare to Krell and ML. I came across this site after spending hours online reading reviews. A used X-250.5 is just over my budget. I thought this would be a good place to learn a little more about the technology behind these amps before spending more than I really want to. I asked why the stereo amps were not Dual Mono amps like some of the other expensive amplifiers on the market. The only answer I got so far is "Less is More".

Have you actually listened to a Pass?

If you are so focussed on the number of transformers rather than what really matters - just bugger off and buy a Musical Fidelity or something!

Don't be too concerned about whether it is dual mono or not, try and have a listen to one.

Default I'm new in town and very loss.

I know this is off subject. And i apologize. Me-Newbie from Brooklyn NY.Also I am new at this Audiophile stuff. I just completed my complete Maggie rebuild and upgrade. And I had to make x-over.I took1 electronic class in H.S.But I was good and I'. a quick learn.I taught myself all I know. Now that I'm slightly refreshed on reading schematic and playing w/components. I want to take on an Amp build project. Some1 told about 1stwatt and i found that it is a D.I.Y.
Interesting and humble the man who designed this amp.For him to offer directions and "wheres and whats" is a kind thing.I can not afford this Audio fetish of mine.(Brooklyn:-{)
I also seen you name Nelson Pass are you the same form Pass audio? and are the 1 who offered this <i think f5 for ppl to build themselves? If so Thank you .
Also I tip my hat to you for your success and accomplishments,in which I am not to familiar.
I seen the x250 PASS amp.And I'm curious to see if this is also broken down for a D.I.Y. If so where can I find all info.If not I really want to build a high end powerful 200w/ch Amp.At the lowest cost possible. Most likely I will fail.Or at least at the 1st attempt at it.It took5 tries for me to replace the Mylar on the MAggie SMGa.ANd now these babies are hungry.I have a mc2105.Not enough the are growing fast.
Can some 1 point me in the right direction. And give an idea what and how much "MORE or LESS"or "LESS or MORE".JK ;-} I know you guys don't like that statement.I had to use it.LOL
Here is some of my blunders and successes ,

I will appreciate any help and will keep you posted on progess.

Trance, why not go to a local electronics shop for the repair, it would probably cost a fraction of 2k and you get to keep your cherished amp?

Is there a gain in building a (Pass) amp with one powersupply per channel vs one dedicated powersupply? Did someone listen to the two versions and notice an audible difference?

I am building an F5 and was thinking of building it as two monoblocks.

Thanks,

Jeroen

The only excuse I can see, for making an amp with 2 transformers, is mono-blocks.
The only excuse for mono-blocks, is that a stereo version would be too heavy to handle.

I wouldnt know either way to be honest, but dual mono sure sounds sexy in the brochures

WTFuse, the X250.5 is bigger.

PS : The box is so big because it needs to dump 350W of heat, a minor issue that the competition doesn't have.

(each amp side running on its own set of secondary transformer windings/rectifier bridge/smoothing capacitors is also considered dual mono)
