Default Hafler P3000: crackling in right channel

Hi guys,

I purchased a used Hafler P3000 off eBay only to discover it has a soft crackling noise in the right channel.

My product return time limit has expired (3 days) and I may be stuck with the amp.

I understand from reading that a bad cap could cause this problem, it could also be a bad pot. I notice that the volume control knobs are not located in their stock position--they stand out from the faceplate almost 1/8" more than stock knobs. Someone has probably replaced the volume control pots. They have an interesting feel--slight drag, like an expensive door hinge. Hey, I'm a carpenter, that's how I relate, ha...

Thanks in advance,

John

Thanks for looking...

It appears that the unit was dropped at some point in time. The volume pots are protruding from the faceplate an 1/8" on the right side and 1/16" on the left (they should be flush) and the right front heat sink is bent.

The previous owner has offered to split the repair cost with me. I'm willing to pitch in because the amp was sold to me for much less than comparable P3000 units.

The shipping container, though lightweight, shows no signs of damage. Of course, this begs the question: was the amplifier damaged prior to shipping? Oh eBay... I have a love/hate relationship with you.

Moral of story: If it's too good to be true....
