What are you going to use for driving the main spindle?

I knew you were going to ask that LOL.

A Honda 600cc direct drive.

naw

I'll start with an old but good small router that was given to me. (too fast I know) Hope to move up to a real spindle motor VFD controlled if the surplus market allows someday.....

Pity you're so far away.....I have a real nice servo motor you could have. It's just too heavy to ship :-(

Should I look up the cost of shipping?

Nope - but are you suggesting to drive a spindle with a servo motor? What would you use for the actual spindle... DIY?

No problem - a 24pack of 'Keystone' is only $3.99. I'll grab a case tomorrow and hang on to it.

Never tried the selemineiunm on the altec horn. I juust built mine and basically left it alone - good for now:)

OK my fine man, you've way surpassed what I'm looking for :)

As nice as it sounds, you are describing something over budget and probably much larger than I am looking for.

How bout something like

this , riding on some angular contact bearings. This driven by a nice servo motor or a decent DC motor, controlled by a DC motor controller (like this ) that is capable of being controlled by the analog output of this

This, I think I could do.

Just a plain spindle like the one in your link, is also a fine solution. You will though be limited when it comes to tools. Not really an issue to you I guess ;)

A couple of angular contact bearings, is just fine. Just spend the little extra, and get the ceramic ball version. First and foremost, they need less lubrication (less lube=less mess), second they mostly survive lack of lubrication (bad things happens to good machines, you know), and third ceramic balls have much higher maximum speed rating, which is an issue in your case, as you need speed, when lacking brute force.

Both the building of the machine, and it's use, would be strictly for hobby. Cost is an issue. For my needs an 'ER' collet system is plenty flexible.

Thanks for your suggestions - you've sent me down a better path. ;)

BTW, see if you can order the bearings through somebody who uses lots of them, they get 70 to 85% discount :)

What are you planning to use for the X-Y-Z spindles?
