no, you are absolutely right, there are better things, but wont there always be

but its a spot on match for the requirements I have for my specific input stage
high-Z input with a little gain(6-12db), and running on +/-20V

but you are right
from reading jfet boz thread, it really is tempting for bass input
simpler, and very well documented

and seems Nelson actually found lower distorting with lower voltage, so taking the positive rail of the +/-20V ought to work ok

I think the 10 ohm at the Source is 22 ohms if voltage is dropped to 16v.
