Default DB25 Umbilical for Pass X0.2/X1?

I'm on a quest to find an upgrade to the Made-in-China DB25 umbilicals (they appear to be basic parallel cables made by LapLink) that come stock with the X0.2 and X1 preamps.

What are your thoughts about the Mogami Gold DB25 to DB25 which is commonly used by the pro recording industry?

And yes, I know the good folks at Pass don't believe there's any sonic benefit from an upgrade but I've queried customers who've done it and claim there is a significant improvement (BTW, absolutely avoid doing business with Revelation Audio Labs who makes a very expensive version of this cable: The cablemaker has ripped off dozens of trusting customers, me included.)

Thanks for any advice or guidance you can offer.

I have two suggestions:

1) Ask the cable companies under consideration to send you samples or buy the cables on approval. If they don't agree to either proposal then I would be suspicious.

2) Build your own cables with the best cable and connectors you can find. Offhand I would recommend that you browse the Belden or Carol offerings for cable in the big online catalogs like Mouser. Likewise I would browse the AMP offerings for connectors.

When you perform your listening tests I recommend that you start by cleaning and re-seating the connectors on the factory cables.

I wish I had this particular problem to solve in my system.

Mouser's cable isn't audiophile quality. Would much prefer pre-made cable like the Mogami if it works in this app.

In the case of the X0.2, the DB25 connectors only handle
logic for the volume controls and selectors, not any signal,
so presuming that the connections are made at all, it shouldn't
make a difference. There is also a DB9 carrying power, using 3
conductors in parallel for each line. This is unregulated power,
which goes through regulation and filtering.

Replacing cables is straightforward enough. The cables are
straight-through, pin to pin, and we use all pins.

Hi Nelson,

Thanks for the information. So, it seems the DB9 connectors are the ones I should consider replacing, not the DB25s. They should be much easier to find as an upgrade.

Well, no. If they are factory standard and the connections are squeaky clean then there is no advantage to changing them.

If someone has claimed a benefit from changing a perectly good part then you might want to question their psychology!!!

I don't know of a better connector, but that doesn't mean
that there isn't one. Most likely it will just be more shiny.

Default your hearing might differ !

In this hifi thread, a fan reported big difference between a short custom cable from the original (X1 though, not X0.2), sorry the text is in Chinese,

review33.com
the poster was heman123

he said the shorter cable that came with the unit he bought used has much thicker sound / texture, but now he moved the equipment around so he is looking for a longer but better length.
