Default XBoSoZ tests and other stuff

Here are a couple of results from tests Vossie and myself recently did on our hi-fi systems:

For all our tests we used Mr.Pass's own caps, I assume it is his because there is only written NP on them, no other brand name

Test 1.) We both build a XBoSoZ but he used 47uf np electrolytic caps for C101 and C102 while I used 10uf np metalised polyester film caps on mine. When tested both on my Aleph30, the only audible differance between the 2 was that his were much better with the low frequencies.
So I got a couple of 22uf and 33uf np electrolytic caps and tried various combinations by adding them to my existing 10uf's. (I don't know if it is a good thing to mix differant type of caps....) My conclusions is that the 10uf np metalised polyester film + 22uf np electrolytics in parrallel ,32uf in total, sounded the best. The high's where still very alive and clear while the lows became more prominent and deeper.

Test 2.) I also fitted 5.2ohm resistors on all AC leads from mains and to rectifiers, and added bypass caps on 1000uf smoothing caps, saw this somewhere but can not find now. It really improved the whole sound spectrum.

Test 3.) With XBoSoZ driving Aleph30 and Monitor Audio Silver3 speakers, bi-wiring was not good, low frequencies were completely muffled.

Test 4.) Vossie used some no name heavy duty speaker cable which was good to produce nice bass but a dissaster on the highs, even standard "2 core house wire" , quit thin as well, sounded much better, but the best results where from the "AudioQuest Type 2 HyperBlitz" speaker cable.

Test 5.) We also tried differant quality interconnects between CD player and pre-amp, but could not hear any mentionable differances. The standard issue factory leads sounded the same as the Monitor Audio Acostic , which was the best we had.

Test 6.) Not really a test but rather just to hear the differance, we connected his Mission 702 speakers to my system, total differant class. Now we aint friends any more, I locked him out and kept his Missions

Hi xsnailx
When you change C101 and C102 you also change your output impedance which can have a negative effect, depending what power amp you use. If you go through this thread, x soz , there are only 717 posts
, you will find alot of good information on BoSoZ.

What I can tell you is to try for yourself, what work for 1 person might be differant for another, something about individual taste

What ever you experience, please share, might be usefull for somebody else.
