One of the ways I attempt to deal with my limited time and resources is to run "what if" scenarios in my head. It allows me to--hopefully--identify dead ends so that I do not waste time and effort. I sometimes run very extreme what ifs. One is: What if I were to lose my hearing? It wouldn't do much to my writing, but it would obviously be devastating to my audio fiddlings. So what to do with my electronic parts and the modest sum of knowledge I have accumulated? The optimum answer, for me, would be robotics.
Now, I can't say that I had carried the train of thought to its conclusion, but the idea of designing "personal satisfaction units" might be an interesting niche market.

a little sidenot about ...........

Pass Labs and Stereophile's Products of the Year AWARD
... which I would imagine is something really good & not easy-to-get...

For example latest All Categories Absolute Winner of the
Stereophile Product of the Year ( 2006 )
was this one
1206poty.caliburn06.jpg

... in these days of digital .... a turntable!!!
Continuum Audio Labs Caliburn .... $99,500

===============================================

Latest AWARD to Pass Labs by Stereophile I found is from 1999
A quick search renders the following search hits, history,
with link to Stereophile review articles:
-------------------------------

Year Product - Category
and link to review

1999 Pass Labs X1000 monoblock - Power amplifier
http://www.stereophile.com/amplificationreviews/699pass/

1997 Pass Labs Aleph 3 - Power amplifier
http://www.stereophile.com/amplificationreviews/674/

1995 Pass Labs Aleph 0 monoblock - Power amplifier
http://cygnus.ipal.org/mirror/www.passlabs.com/a0stphle.htm
Stereophile, March 1995, Dick Olsher:
Conclusions
"The Pass Aleph 0 is truly a breakthrough product.
I hereby nominate it as Solid-State Amplifier of the Decade. "

-------------------------------

My lineup comment:
Was a while since latest Pass Labs Stereophile award.
But I am sure there have been other awards since 1999.
Done by just as good or better reviewers of audio products.

Outcome of these nominations are much random
as they are dependent on
the personal taste of some few persons at a magazine.
Nevertheless, mid-late of 1990-ies was truly a Golden Era of Pass Labs.

As Nelson has said at times:
There is more to come ...

No doubt about it!
At least not in my little devoted lineup mind.

Much Regards

Forget the stereophile and its awards. In 90's, It used to be a happy moment when each new issue arrived by post. But since 2004 I read stereophile before I sleep. Simply because it makes me sleep. Simply because the products are choosen based on the relation between reviewer and manufacturer. That is sad but correct. In my opinion, stereophile reviewers keep stereophile running in business in order to enjoy themselves. I haven't seen any review which ends bad for manufacturer: every speaker perfect, every amplifier belong to Class A, every Krell equipment stays 6 months with Wes Philips, every french speaker is lean for Sam Tellig, every speaker cable outperforms previous one (Brian Damkroger)....................................................................:derivative of the derivative is square root of derivative.
I think they have to consider that some real people like me somehow get access the products they rate Class A and experience actually.
First time I actually heard a Pass Product was my Power amplifier that I bought after 10 minutes listening with Sonus Faber Amati Anniver.
Real people know good products.
Nelson Pass makes , designs ,...only amplifiers nothing else(rushmore is another issue) However, companies who try to make everything like Gryphon, Burmester, MBL, Meridian, Krell, Gamut, Linn, Classe.....in reality produce nothing very good.(med-good)

Hats off for Mr. Pass because he deserves more than anybody else in audio industry.

Excellent! When do we expect her first schematic? :)

Al,
She asked me if I'd teach her electronics the other day (she thinks the colors are pretty), but I think Wyatt (one of the twins) will beat her to it. I left him on his back on a blanket in the middle of the living room floor yesterday. Left the room long enough to warm up a bottle. Came back. Little feller had flipped over onto his stomach and gone scootchy, scootchy, scootchy six or eight feet across the floor and was gnawing on a schematic; scrabbling his fingers on a big heatsink I'd left sitting next to the schematic.
Make of that what you will.

just don't leave TWO big chunks of heat sink laying around, or it won't be long before he starts giving them that 'distressed' look. Infant audiophiles love the sound of chunks of metal banging together. I know.:bawling:

Actually, there were two. Honestly, my first worry was that he would distress himself. These are big heatsinks and they were standing on end. If he had managed to topple one, it would have hurt badly.
It wasn't until later that I discovered he had actually chewed off part of the schematic.
I've always wondered about the old saying, "You are what you eat."

If you want a list of awards, you can go to to www.passlabs.com
and look under "other" and then "awards".

.

Okay Dear Nelson Pass :)
Think I will have to do what you say:
Visit www.passlabs.com and inform myself better
of what's going on - in more modern times.

Was really too long since I browsed your websites for eventual updates.
I have these to check out, too: www.firstwatt.com and www.passdiy.com

------------------------

Some intense periods ... there is nothing but amplifiers ... for me.
But I am very busy with my other interests these days.

I am a talented man with many other likings
... writing web scripts for nice site designs is only one.

Like this wellknown: http://lineup.awardspace.com/
It is written using only Windows Notepad plain simple texteditor,
word for word from scratch entered by my hands
until a good working website with colorful but tasteful layout.
No using Frontpage or Dreamweaver for me.
No need too!

Playing chess over internet ... so called EMAIL Chess is another.
I usually win.

Photographing and making web galleries,
I took up again,
when buying my first digital camera not long ago:
One 'Nikon Coolpix'.

For me THERE IS a horisont beyond and above audio amplifiers ....

Regards
lineup - in very early springtimes, over and up here in the North Europe

Mr. Pass ,
maybe it is better to put reviews in Pdf format on your web site. We may read and enjoy in english ofcourse!

That would indeed make it easier to get more info about the products.

I bought a 2nd handed Aleph P in 2004.
When I first saw it at the dealer I only had some memory fragments about Pass.
Could only recall a DIY-session at a friend in -96. One guy had built a Zenamp. And after the listeing he needed pot holders in order to pick it up without burning his fingers :D

I scanned the Internet and found Pass and Aleph to be something good (and stumbled over something nicknamed SuSy), in particular I tried to find bad reviews. Didn't found any, so I bought the Aleph.

Last year I had fight with my wallet, and managed to buy a X150.5 .
Why choose Pass?

a) Company reputation. Pass have been in business for a long time.
b) Good experience with the Aleph (still using it).
c) Nelson kindly shares his knowledge with DIY people, so I thought it was fair to support him with some $$.
d) Anyone found a bad review of the X/X.5/XA series?

I didn't listen to the X150.5 before ordering it, a risk taken by me. But it turned out alright. I understand that some buyers are very reluctant to buy products without having a chance to evaluate them at home first. I hope Pass can make arrangements for these customers too.
