You could use a microcontroller which sends it a string on power up and then "disconnects" itself so winamp can control it later (might depend on how you have it connected, if it can override the bootup state of say the parallel/com port).

Or better yet, talk through the micro over rs232/usb when the computer has booted, but let it do its own thing otherwise.

but I believe you are looking for a simple solution, which this isnt.. hm it might be possible to modify the bootup procedure to send out a message. but then you still woudlnt see it until say half way into boot.

If you hunt around, there's plans for using a microcontroller to emulate those serial interface LCD modules. If the source code is provided, you could modify it to display some default message until the computer says something over the serial line.

It's possible that there are motherboards out there with BIOSes that have been patched to support LCD displays. I've got an old Wyse '286 that came with an LCD front panel display.

Maybe you're better off just speeding up Windoze to make it boot faster. Check out the forums at MP3car.com for some good info.

You might also want to consider running a DOS player without Windows. MPXplay is still being actively developed, and has just about any feature you could ask for (including LCD display support and resuming). http://www.geocities.com/mpxplay/
