I have a bunch of old UPS that I got for free from work, they range in size from 250va to 750va. Is there any useful parts inside these things bvesides the batteries?? there are some nice sized transformers in them, are they useful for anything, maybe diy power conditioners??
thanks |

probably plenty of high current transistors and heat sinks.
basically a UPS is a battery powered sine wave oscillator and high power amplifier with the transformer as the load. you will also find lots of useful passive parts, and probably some fair to good quality op amps as well. most UPS's have sine wave output, but a small few of the cheapies might have a square wave output. it's best to test a UPS to find out

Hey:
They make nice inverters for mobile use. Just bring the battery leads out , use a 5A diode in the pos lead , and hook to a car battery or other suitable batt. Also put a diode in the DC supply lead , to the batt , from the internal 12V supply to isolate the two sources. Now you can run the UPS from a car batt. or AC. This is all from an Amateur Radio magazine , I think " 73 ". Hope this helps Ed |
