I came around this info while searching data about some ¨Tesla¨400 volt 2 uF caps that I obtained in an old radio components shop here in Buenos Aires.
They stock some old material of the days of vacuum tube radios: lenz wire (cotton insulated), assorted caps (micamolds, wax, ceramics, elcos) etc.
Not a great deal of tubes, sadly.
I thought that those Tesla caps were nonpolar PIO´s, but then I realized -luckily- that they are, actually, axial polarized electrolytics. If I would used them in the way I was thinking originally -crossover high pass-, surely they had exploded.

So, I checked them in the basics -with some LCR tester, as stated in the info of the second link-, and being apparently fine -hey, those caps have at least 25 years!-, I used them to bypass some 10.000 uF Epcos in the PSU of my amp...
I´m relatively sceptic about the audibility of some bypassing, moreso if done with NOS stuff: sometimes is barely audible, sometimes is (at least to me) inaudible; and some other times is very noticeable (I have bypassed some dac in an cdp with dramatic results: a very compressed sound became very rich and dynamic).
Well, the story is that: with those Tesla there, the amp gained an incredible authority in the bass. Much more attack, more apparent speed, etc. The midrange became ¨creamy¨, natural and addictive -priorly it was etched and hard-...
Other bypasses of the same component, even with 2/4uF polipropylenes, policarbonates, mylars etc. were not as effective, soundwise, as the obtained with the old caps.
Why? I don´t know. Maybe those old caps are of very good quality, who knows. Tesla is a reputed manufacturer. And I don´t think that I´m deluding myself: the change in the sound is so obvious that can´t go unnoticed.
Well, only an anecdote. Those articles about caps proved to be useful for the task.

Cheers

Interesting how they're all rolled constructions except the micas.

I like silver micas :) I use them in my crossover boards in my marchand XM-126.

Funny thing is, I think I remember solen touting their films as non-inductive stacked types. Seems that the (excellent and incredibly expensive) duelunds are following the stacked construction type as well.

Perhaps we can get a bulk cap manufacturer to start offering quality films in stacked constructions, some day, at somewhat reasonable prices (and in values big enough for crossovers and coupling caps)

I like them very much too, but I have used them very ¨amateurishly¨...
As Miller cap in some amplifier -substituting ceramics- they changed the sound a lot, and for the better...

I´m very careful in my appreciations of the sound of capacitors, cause I have noted certain ¨trend¨ to adscribe to the noted sonic signature some of the physical characteristics -in the ¨tactile¨ or ¨visual¨sense- of the material being used in the dielectric.

I think that maybe our psyche tends to ¨fill the gaps¨ in some instances when the factual evidence is somewhat subtle, or difficult to grab.
I don´t know if I´m expressing myself with enough clarity. I´m trained a bit in humanistics -psychology, etc-, and is interesting to note how men has adscribed some particular virtues to minerals, gases, or manufactured materials in every society or culture.

But well, on the topic of silver micas, I have read about some things about ¨hardness¨, or ¨brightness¨.... just the kind of tactile and visual feelings that the words ¨mica¨ and ¨silver¨ evoke.
In the case of ¨paper in oil¨, you´ll usually read about ¨warmth¨, ¨liquidity¨, etc: maybe sensorial transposition of the feelings that the terms ¨paper¨ and ¨oil¨ -and it´s organics origins- evoke?
Who knows, but it´s plausible.

In speakers is similar, and much more pronounced: metal dome tweets sound ¨metallic¨ (I have heard some Vifa alu domes that doesn´t sound metallic at all; and I had turn from soft to steely some silk dome merely by changing the amount of wool in the backchamber of the polepiece).
Alchemy had a lot in common with our audio passion; some sort of oblique passport -by metal, by crystal, by numbers and chemicals and electrons- to a place or thing that no one really knows or imagine, but whose importance is great for the person doin´such a thing...

It´s very interesting all this matter; the realm in where our perceptions became entwined with a lot of factors -even inconscious ones- that, eventually, will form some sort of opinion or idea. I believe that the ¨psychoacoustics¨ issue is a very relevant one.

For all of this, I try to be very cautious before deciding if something is my cup of tea or not.
Every time I´ve used silvermicas -IE miller cap, or bypass in crossovers-, the sound was more fluent and open. But I haven,t detected any mineral qualities in it.
But sorry for this verbose, obscure and theoretical post. I´m a little crazy this afternoon.
