I'm guessing FIMO would be good for making knobs and sliders, are there other alternative hand-moulding/hardening plasticine type products that I should look into that might be more suitable?

I have used Sculpey http://www.sculpey.com/projects.htm for custom wheel emblems. It is easily sanded and painted if needed. Also JB Weld's JB Stik is a 2 part putty that hardens to a drill and tappable strength. I have used the Stik to repair a broken knob on a binding post that I turn down very tight. Sculpey should be available in art stores and JB Stik in hardware stores. Enjoy!

Well,l you should be able to make a cast by pressing an existing knob into some clay, and then use acrylic and resin to make em.... nice clear knobs
