Nord,

It also goes by the name of Lye (sodium hydroxide). It is also the primary, and often the only ingredient in powdered drain cleaner... white crystals.

Be reasonably carefull with that stuff... DEFINITLEY cover your eyes. It can react with many things violently... make sure your are following a procedure.

Sodium Hydroxide is used to "develop" the photo-mask, not to etch. A solution of a few percent by weight is usually enough.

We'll reiterate Poo's comment -- wear goggles when pouring and mixing the crystals into water.

For etching I use drugstore brand (dilute) hydrogen peroxide along with a bit of muriatic acid. Don't bother getting stronger versions of the H2O2 -- it's difficult to store and very reactive.

Just as important as goggles: sturdy rubber gloves. That stuff will turn your hands into soap.

Yes, this stuff is REALLY ugly agressive... It tends to destroy any organic material. (like skin) I already had the fun to have that in melted consistence in my face... I actually heard the etching... My friend told me that he never before saw a human run that fast.
Okay enough warnings to handle that stuff with care...

To your question, Nordic, shops selling PCBs with photoresist typically also sell the developer needed. You do not need much, not enough to dissolve yourself.
It won't help you, i have 1Kg left...

Thank you all, I managed to get a packet at the hardware shop, nice and cheap... its flakes (i was expecting balls after reading some websites).

Also I didn't see any of the warnings until now, but I managed to safely mix use and dispose of the developer.. Just treated it like satan's sperm... will put my woodwork googles and mask on next time then...

Stored the dried flakes in a bag in a metal tastic rice tin with a tight lid so the cats can't get to it...
