resistors before the diode in a bridged rectifier: what does it do?

I've come across lots of designs (mainly for SS) where the designer have placed resistors before the diodes?

What is the purpose of the resistors?

What you have drawn is "in series" with the diodes, which reduces inrush current and the crest factor of the supply current.
