If I was to do a wired option I would probably sew the headphone cable into my motorcycle jacket going from up the neck have an exposed female headphone jack there and then going down to a pocket when I could attach the playing device. If you acutally sew it into jacket you won't be able to feel the cord and it won't be loose to flap around in wind, and will be pretty much invisible. having a connector to connect to the helmet means that when you take off the helmet you just have to remember to disconnect the plug first.

What kind of output device were you planning to play your music from?

Oh and what is your definition of good quality sound? what's your rig at home like for example.

Regular old analog FM can be good. Look around for some off-the-shelf wireless headphones to hack.
For top quality, send S/PDIF over a wireless TV link.

Or just get a small flash player and clip it into or onto the helmet; the RCA Lyra I have will play a long time off a 512M SD card, and it's about the size of my two thumbs together. Sound quality is as good as the headphones you use and how well the MP3's are encoded.

Maybe it's more sensible to come up with a wireless remote for the helmet-mounted MP3 player.

Have you thought of having the ipod on your body and using regular wired headphones. For the remote function, there are gadget which attach to the top of the ipod and have a separate little remote control, which you could attach to the handlebars. Like these?????

Without wishing to put a dampener on this thread and your project, but are there not safety issues about listening to music inside a helmet? I remember reading somewhere once that -- like using mobile phones in cars -- listening to headphones and shutting off outside noise means that the precise part of your brain that usually concentrates on driving/riding is otherwise occupied....
