Testing Stepper Motor And Driver Board

The motor and drive in question is from a American DJ Cosmic sound activated light piece. The motor spins the two lights in the dome. The light does turn on when placed near loud music. Before shelling out for a new motor from ADJ I want to test both the motor and its driver. I would think doing the two seperately would be the best way. Could I get away with using a parallel port motor driver and using a logic probe to test the Cosmic driver? It's cramped inside the Cosmic, so guts would have to come out anyway.
