I've done searches three times now, on the forum, trying to seperate the knobs from the chaff, but no go. I keep getting distracted by great threads, like 'your first insane project that went wrong', etc'.
Back to the subject at hand: I'm looking for -multiple- websites that have a good selection of knobs for projects, or to find a set to make a piece of resuced audio gear look good again. In this particular case, it's a Counterpoint pre-amp, that I rescued, and repaired. It now needs a set of knobs to suit it's slim design. No source for the originals, but I'm sure you folks know some good websites that have a decent selection of knobs. Getting a set of proper matching knobs, ones that make a piece of audio gear look great...can be the difference between selling it for $300, vs getting $500, or even $600 for it. Happens all the time. So a good set that matches the given piece of gear, is actually critical. There seems to be no coherent thread that lists this actually quite critical component of common DIY use. Hopefully this thread will serve that important purpose. I've looked around on the web more than a few times, it just seems like a difficult thing to do..to find a good selction of audio quality knobs - ones that are cosmetically pleasing. |

Thank you for your effort, Poobah. But..and well..the selection ofered is good...only about three-four knob types from all the companies mentioned..are suitable for 'high end' projects, or at least the kinds of projects that one might like to have look 'cosmetically' matched, advanced, cultured, suave (raised eybrow, etc) etc. The rest of the knobs are purely industrial.
It's the great and good looking designs that are difficult to find. Places with any selection..at all..that is difficult to find. I will be contributing to the thread myself soon,as I sift my way though the meagare offerings out there..finding ONE knob at one company..one knob at another. It will be slow going, but they are out there. Getting the source points for 'quality knobs' (as many as possible), in one thread, that is the difficulty. I had found the place that sold knobs that are identical, or close to the design on Audio Research Equipment through the 80-90's, that was a nice find. Now I have to track it down again... Chris's Parts conneXion sells a few nice ones. They are out there....but they are suffereng a vast distance in source points, and tend to exist in single (or few) examples at any given retail or net locale. Hence the reason for this thread. If you add to the thread, please be sure to add in a way that is clean and concise, and please attempt to add a link that will stand the test of time. For it is not just for it's usefulness now, but for the guy who searches and find this thread, a year or two down the road. |

i agree with you 100%. those knobs poobah listed are all "industrial" and arent meant for high end audio gear. IMO they would look terrible on a nice piece of equipment.
here is an idea... if you can design what you want, there are numerous places to get the work done for relatively cheap... www.cnczone.com has a website called "RFQ" (request for quote). it has its own url, but you can find it through cnczone.com. you can design the part (knob or whatever) and throw it out there for a quote. ive done this before and the guys will come back with like $100 for 1, $400 for 1000, but then one guy will come back with like $15 for 10 of them or something. there are a lot of people that have machines at home that just want practice or a project to work on and dont really care about the cash. if you are doing 3-4 knobs, it could be a good idea, and you should end up getting exactly what you want. |

You need to dig a little through those sites... There are many styles that would be suitable for esoteric audio.
Your problem will consistantly be finding someone who will sell just a handful. Yes, the bulk of the offerings are industrial... perhaps because that is where the bulk of the demand is. If you looking for Ebubu wood knobs backlit with blue LEDs off the shelf for $0.79, you're going to be disappointed. |

ooook, Poobah. I'm not a fan of lit knobs myself....
Here's Chris's selection of decent Knobs, at the "Parts ConneXion": http://www.partsconnexion.com/catalo...sandknobs.html A Japanese site that may have, and looks to have a near equivalent to the counterpoint knobs I'm looking for: http://www.dhtsound.com/ Here we go. A very nice selection of quality machined audio grade control knobs: http://www.thlaudio.com/image.htm |
