you can buy a DMM for £2 upwards.
You do not need great accuracy, the DMM is likely to be better than +-1% on the DC scales, this is good enough.
You may want to invest in a meter that has a wide range of scales, which are still available cheaply, look at the AC, DC, ohms, scales and see what ranges are available to fit your budget.
If you take up electronics then you might want transistor hFE and capacitance and frequency. I would buy a second or even dedicated meter to carry out these extra functions.
