Hello, first time posting in the forum.
I am designing a simple phantom power supply with a signal balanced xlr in and two outputs, a balanced xlr out and 1/4 " unbalanced out. A need a way of selecting the outputs. The first prototype used a 9v dpdt latching relay. These relays are quite pricey, (7$ each). It seems to me that the simplest thing would be a single mechanical dpdt switch that's panel mounted but browsing around I can seem to find any information on whether this is a good idea or what would be a good component to use. Another I've looked into is a semiconductor logic controlled switch, specifically the fairchild FSA2467. Anyone have experience with this stuff. Andrew |

I guess your most important criterion is going to determine what you use for switching.
If price is most important, a regular old switch hard to beat. You may suffer some possible bandwidth limitations. Noise and intermittent operation may also come with age. If more complexity and cost is not an issue, you can use JFET's. But now you have to come up with a drive scheme. Same with analog switches like the SSM2404. Most analog switches are meant for video not audio. The self noise of these devices may be a little high in this stage. Read the datasheets carefully.

Ok, thanks for your advice. In the end it doesn't seem that a dpdt panel mount switch is any cheaper than a spdt switch and a relay. I'll use the relay to keep the signal paths short. For the sake of others who might want to do something similiar in the future I have choosen:
DF2-L2-DC6V relay digikey part no 255-1042-ND and a rocker switch mom-on-mom digikey part no SW340-ND to supply the 6V to the relay (my whole device is powered from the same 6V source). I'm also wondering about connectors to go from the panel mount inputs and outputs to the board. I could just use posts I suppose but I thought since it is a early attempt at design it might be useful to be able to easily pull out the pcb from the box, and therefore think it would be useful to use connectors. Any suggestions for low noise connectors? |

Is there any harm in leaving both outputs "always on" and avoid the switchgear altogether?
