Default Resistors and soft starts

Newbie question here:
I have a class D amplifier that is powered by a 12.4 volt SMPS power supply. The amplifier requires a soft start to avoid a turn on pop as the capacitors charge up. The manufacturer of the amp (DIY paradise) has a recommended soft startup which is placing a 240ohm 1/2w resistor in a switch posisiton 2 (where 1 is off and 3 is on). Letting the trickle voltage run in for a few seconds and then switch to on.
I am tearing my ahir out trying to reolve this. Here is my problem:
1. The switch position 2 (with resistor) measure a full 12.4 volts across its poles. Postion 1 shows 0 volts whilts postition 3 shows 12.4 volts.
2. The resistor I belive is on the correct location becuase i if i severe it, the voltage drops to zero.
My questions are:
1. Help!!!!! please
2. What voltage should i be reading across the resistor?
3. Is there anything wierd above teh smps supply that would require a different type of resisor?

As part of the troubleshooting i have been going through, i added a LED in series with the resistor and voltage dropped to 10.2V across the poles at posisiton 2. So clearly adding something here is affecting the voltage. I just don't know what to add in hte posistion - resistor wise to get the right volatge to allow for soft start.
Thanks

Resistor is to be connected between 2 and 3 and supply is taken from 3.
This way when the switch is in position 2, it will be in series and wiil be out of ckt when switch goes to 3
