Hi, could someone tell me somthing about these sprague capacitors?
sprague 1uF 600V 118p10506s4 What I'm looking for is usage, quality, are they easy to get ahold of, estimated price and so on. And what is Hermetpoly? I'm asking because a friend of mine gave some of these to me, i'm not looking to sell them but it would be fun to know a value and usage for them. best regards |

They're 1 microfarad at 600 volts DC, probably plastic
film. "Poly" could mean anything; mylar, polypropylene, polystyrene, in increasing order of quality. There are other types of plastic film in roughly the same range of quality. Since they're apparently military specification, they should be very good build quality, depending on the type of dielectric used. If you have a voltmeter and a power supply, charge one up (no more than 50 volts DC for safety reasons) and then short the leads together after the capacitor has been charged for a few minutes. After discharging the capacitor, separate the leads and measure the remaining voltage. The lower the voltage the better the quality of the dielectric. Polypropylene should read below .1 volt after discharge, and stay fairly low. Mylar will read higher and may rise to several volts, which is less desirable (the plastic film has a 'memory'). If the body or leads are magnetic, this is less desirable, but hardly fatal. Most likely application might be in speaker crossovers, coupling/ bypass capacitors in tube power supplies. Don't use them in AC power line circuits unless they are specificially designed for that application! They probably won't fail, but it's >how< they fail that's important. |
