The LED's will run off of AC just fine if you put a diode in there to limit the reverse voltage. That and a resistor sized to give the current through the diode that you need.
The larger problem with replacing dial lamps with LED's is the narrow light emitting pattern from the LED's. They will not light up an area like an incandescent lamp. There are some companies that sell small LED 'bulbs' which contain small clusters of LED's designed to disperse the light somewhat. I think Digikey has a few, but I don't know how well they work. |

Use a diode and resistor in series with the LED. For a typical 3.6V LED, to run @ 7V use a 330 or 470 ohm resistor to limit current depending on how bright you want and how much the LED can handle.
Too keep the LED from blinking at 60HZ, put a 100uf cap across + and - leads of the LED Just like rectifying AC on a Powersupply to turn to DC, on a smaller scale. |
