Note that I did not exclude this.
It was the sort of thing I was thinking of by mentioning time instead of money invested in the counter. Time for DIY construction!

Well, it takes like 15 min. to make such a thing. That's less than it takes to order one

If your into the electronics, you can also build an up/down counter. If you make a Mistake, it can Un-count those turns.
